Where to Stay for Austin Pride 2018

On August 11, Texas’ capital will be flooded with fabulous floats, rainbow flags, and cheers from Austinites and visitors all coming together to celebrate the 28th annual Austin Pride. While the official Pride and Festival is a one-day affair, travelers will want to visit Austin for the weekend and they’ll need a Pride-friendly hotel to complete their stay. Before we share those hotels, here’s some things you need to know about Austin Pride:

What to Expect

Austin has long been a Texas leader for equality and acceptance, so it’s no wonder that the Austin Pride had over 400,000 attendees in 2017 and is expecting more this year. This one-day event has a theme of “Revolution” and will feature a festival at Fiesta Gardens during the day that will include performances by Grammy Award-winning performer, Jody Watley, rappers Cupcakke & Yo Majesty, Dragula monsters Vander Von Odd and Loris, and RuPaul Drag Racers Jiggly Caliente and Stacy Layne Matthews. There will also be vendors, food, and rides. In the evening, festival-goers will move to downtown Austin to witness an evening Pride parade.

Where is Austin Pride?

Austin Pride will be held on August 11th with the Festival kicking off at 11 a.m. at Fiesta Gardens (officially named Edward Rendon, Sr. Park at Festival Beach) and continuing until 6 p.m. Fiesta Gardens is southeast of downtown Austin on the north side of the Colorado River and sits alongside Lady Bird Lake and the Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail. The Parade will begin at 8 p.m. on Congress Avenue and make its way into downtown Austin, ending at 10 p.m. There will be a pre-Parade dance party with DJ Jen DM at 7:30 p.m. on the corner of 7th and Congress.

Austin Pride Parade Route for 2018

Unlike most Pride Parades, the Austin Parade occurs at night and is completely free. The Parade will start at 8 p.m. on Saturday August 11 at the State Capitol. Marchers will head down Congress and move across 4th Street..

How Much is Admission for Austin Pride?

The Austin Pride Parade is completely free, while the Festival costs a fee. A general admission ticket is $17.00 if ordered beforehand and $20 at the gate in cash only. Children under six are free. Tickets for children 7-17 years of age cost $10 and can only be purchased at the gate in cash.

LGBTQ*-Friendly Places to Explore in Austin

Austin doesn’t have a designated LGBT neighborhood, and most Austinites are proud to say that the city is an overall liberal and welcoming environment. East Austin and downtown are known to have higher LGBT populations and friendly spots like Irene’s, host of drag brunches, and coffee shop, Halycon, just like the Warehouse District is home to many LGBTQ+ nightlife like Oilcan Harry’s, Seller’s Underground, and Rain on 4th.

There’s a few Pride-related events going on during Austin Pride that might be of interest. Lesbutante & The Boss will host the Year of the Woman Womxn’s Party on August 10 at the corner of 4th and Congress, and the Let’s Get Wet Pool Party on August 12 at the Azul Rooftop Pool Bar & Lounge. Following the Pride Parade on August 11, there’s a free after party called 20GAYTEEN on The Vaughn’s rooftop.
