Five to explore: Rome, Italy

Taking us on a tour of his favorite city in the world, Italian Live2Leave app super-user Emanuele shares with us the hidden gems of Rome.

Emanuele normally stays in Trastevere, a buzzing area full of restaurants and bars. His top tip is to book a trip in autumn as it is actually the perfect time year to go as it’s cooler and less crowded. Bookmark his discoveries here and don’t forget to join him on the Live2Leave app.

1: Take a trip back in time

Church of St. Louis of the French: Designed and built in the 16th Century, this is a real piece of history, and a must-see for the art-buffs among you. Revealing some impressive Caravaggio canvases, this little gem can be found inside the church San Luigi dei Francesi.

2. What you really came for: the pasta

Felice a Testaccio is where you can find arguably the best ‘Cacio e Pepe’ pasta in Rome….and possibly in the world! Do not leave the city without trying it – one of Rome’s most famous pasta recipes. This one will leave you wanting more!

3: Cocktail o’ clock

Go for a drink at Bar San Calisto, a hidden gem where you can find real Romans sipping on their Aperol Spritz. Try the Affogato (vanilla ice cream with a shot of espresso) to cool off in the summer months, or their seasonal hot chocolate in autumn and winter.

4: An oasis of green

Villa Doria Pamphili is also known as Rome’s secret park. The gardens around Villa Pamphili are a great place to go for a run, or just to escape from the hustle and bustle of the centre. This 17th Century villa is the largest landscaped public garden in the city.

5: How many slices of pizza are too many?

You can’t really visit Italy without having one, and the Romans are famous for their thin and crispy pizzas. Dar Poeta is a lovely little restaurant in the heart of Trastevere, where you can stroll around the neighbourhood for a passeggiata (promenade) to Piazza San Maria to wind down the evening.
